The Responsible Cocoa Platform: a Breakthrough in Smallholder Sustainability

For the first time brands can stay ahead of mounting compliance and sustainability standards in the smallholder-dominated cocoa industry. Sourcemap’s new Responsible Cocoa Platform (RCP) is propelling the industry forward by offering a secure and scalable tool that takes advantage of automated workflows for ongoing data collection, real-time satellite monitoring, and verification through farm-to-factory traceability. The RCP builds on ten years of R&D dedicated to building dynamic and intuitive software for monitoring and evaluation and product traceability in smallholder cocoa communities.

The Responsible Cocoa Platform (RCP) enables brands and wholesalers to meet compliance standards, avoid risk — and go far beyond certification.

What the RCP Can Do

1.   Ensure compliance with the Cocoa & Forests Initiative’s deforestation framework—the industry's most important commitment to stopping farming in protected and deforested regions

2.   Manage the World Cocoa Foundation’s Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation Systems – the gold standard for tackling the worst forms of child labor at the community level

3.   Verify the cocoa chain of custody in near real time through cloud-based traceability from every GPS-mapped farm plot to delivery at the confectionery factory

4.   Securely and scalably handle data collection, analysis and reporting with the highest standards for security and privacy for farmers and enterprise alike

How Brands Benefit

The Responsible Cocoa Platform represents the first time that brands can be assured of ongoing compliance with sustainability commitments across smallholder supply chains. Here's how it works:

  1. Suppliers are registered through cascading invitations (brand > trader > country office > farmer organization)

  2. RFI's are sent via web or mobile apps to collect farmer demographic, household, community and farm geo-data on their farms

  3. Data is automatically validated and encrypted to remove identifying elements

  4. Sourcemap uses a combination of risk heat maps -- including real-time satellite imagery and local government maps -- to monitor the supplier data for deforestation risk

  5. Risk scores are calculated based on data quality and risk probability

  6. Brands have access to an online dashboard to monitor supplier risk for their dedicated supply chains

How Traders Benefit

The Responsible Cocoa Platform allows traders to provide their customers with full bean-to-bar traceability, ensuring compliance with zero-deforestation and no-child-labor commitments for every shipment. Here's how it works:

  1. Extension agents capture productivity and livelihoods data directly from communities and farms using offline-capable mobile apps on iOS and Android with GDPR-compliant surveys

  2. Farm-level GPS area data is captured for every farm and used to generate a farmer ID with accurate yield estimate

  3. Traceability data for each bag is captured using mobile apps, batch file uploads and API integration at the collection point, warehouse and port

  4. Each mobile device is tracked to provide useful project management feedback for local offices.

  5. Transaction analytics are used to monitor yields and trigger real-time alerts in case of workforce and volume anomalies

How the Industry Benefits

The RCP is already being used to map more than 250,000 cocoa farms annually and to trace farm-to-factory transactions for 20,000 smallholders. Our vision is to empower each industry stakeholder to focus less on the logistics of compliance and more on driving real impact.

Beyond Cocoa

The Responsible Cocoa Platform is built on a decade of monitoring and evaluation and traceability software expertise. The technology and methods have been validated on a diverse array of farmed and manufactured goods. Beginning with commitments in cocoa, brands and traders can expand use of the Platform beyond the single commodity to ensure compliance with brand-specific key performance indicators across the commodity portfolio.
