CBP Is Cracking Down on Counterfeit Goods - How Mapping Supplier Capacity Can Help

2025-2026 saw a major crackdown in the seizure of counterfeit goods at U.S. borders. In fiscal year 2025, CBP reported seized 78 million counterfeit items valued at over $7.8 billion at the manufacturer's suggested retail prices (if the products were authentically made).

In a recent seizure, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Florida seized a large shipment of counterfeit designer perfumes valued at over $1 million USD, impacting a number of globally recognizable brands. The seizure took place after a February 10th inspection by customs officers uncovered 8,500 bottles of presumably fake perfumes in a shipment originating from Singapore.

Had the perfumes been authentic, they were appraised as a manufacture's suggested retail price of over $1 million. The seizure of this shipment is likely to have a significant impact on the supply chains of a number of top brands

Risk of counterfeiting increases the further you go upstream

Here's the problem. Supply chain mapping is an essential step in preventing counterfeit goods from infiltrating your supply chain. But mapping alone does not get you enough information to close your books. Furthermore, the further you go upstream - to suppliers that are unmapped - the greater the risk of counterfeiting.

Firsthand data collection is essential

Companies need assurance that the facilities in their supply chains are operating within their thresholds and limits. Firsthand data collection is imperative because without it, a facility and/or supplier is less likely to be auditable - meaning they would not would not pass muster with U.S. customs. Assessing whether a facility is operating within its threshold can mean looking at its square footage, number of machines, number of employees, volume capacity per year, any documentation and records regarding annual output and, in some cases, conducting site visits.
