Multi-National Stakeholders Sign Letter to Prevent Further Reopening of EUDR

This week, a coalition of multi-national companies and NGOs including Ferrero, Mighty Earth, Nestlé and others signed an agreement calling for the Commission to refrain for any further reopening of the EU Deforestation Regulation this April.

In a letter addressed to Commissioner for the Environment Jessika Roswall, the signatories call on the European Commission not to reopen the EUDR at the conclusion of its ongoing review, set to conclude in April. They emphasize that companies and producer countries have already made significant investments to comply with the regulation, including developing traceability systems and adapting supply chains, based on the expectation of a stable legislative framework.

Reopening EUDR Would Create "Uncertainty and Undermine Investments" in Compliance

The signatories warn that reopening the regulation again would create uncertainty, undermine these investments, and weaken trust in the EU as a reliable partner, particularly among producer countries. They argue that the remaining challenges should instead be addressed through guidance, FAQs, and ongoing initiatives such as the European Forest Institute (EFI) Community of Practice rather than through additional legislative changes.

The letter also calls for increased support to producer countries, particularly smallholders, to ensure effective implementation and avoid disproportionate costs along the supply chain. The signatories stress that the EUDR is a key tool to promote sustainable and deforestation-free supply chains, and that its success depends on timely, proportionate, and legally certain implementation.

Finally, the coalition urges the Commission to focus the April review on supporting implementation rather than reopening the regulation, and to ensure that companies that have already invested in compliance are not put at a disadvantage. The letter remains open for additional signatures until March 31st.
