The EU Central DPP Registry Launches on July 19th - Here's What You Need to Know

The adoption of the DPP Registry by the EU Commission is planned for July 19th, 2026, providing a common reference point for companies and mandatory product categories. This is not the launch of the actual product passport, but the technical system that will support Digital Product Passports. The first product passport requirement to go into effect will be the battery passport in early 2027.

Product-specific delegated acts are forthcoming to define detailed obligations by category. In the meantime, the DPP Registry will function as a reference infrastructure that will support enforcement once DPPs become mandatory.

The Registry is expected to contain the following information:

  • Product identifiers and references, ensuring consistent linkage between products and their Digital Product Passports

  • Legally required DPP registry metadata, enabling compliant registration, traceability, and consistent linkage between products and their Digital Product Passports

  • References to where passport data is hosted, by brands and authorised service providers

  • Access rights and authentication logic, enabling role-based access for authorities, operators, and consumers

Who needs to register, and how the Registry impacts market access:

The DPP will roll out for different product categories - starting with batteries under the EU Battery Regulation in early 2027. Once product passports are mandatory for a particular product category, market access is dependent on the interaction with the DPP Registry. Companies must ensure that their products have the appropriate data to populate product passports, and the infrastructure to place passports on products.

Competent authorities will use the DPP Registry to enforce DPP requirements, carrying out market surveillance checks and verification of product-level information. The Registry will also facilitate cross-border interoperability with the Single Market as well as potential integration with customs across the EU Member States.
